Why Graybill Literacy & Learning Studio Uses the Orton-Gillingham Approach
We implement the Orton-Gillingham approach because learning is not a one-size-fits-all concept. Multisensory-based teaching allows us to tap into each student’s natural resources. Hearing, vision, touch, and smell are all used to make connections in the brain that support the understanding and retention of skills. We teach this in a systematic, evidence-based progression that has been proven successful for learners of all ages and backgrounds. Orton-Gillingham is an engaging and effective approach to aiding in the growth of your student’s literacy journey.
-
The Orton-Gillingham Approach is always focused on the learning needs of the individual student. At Graybill Literacy & Learning Studio, we design lessons to work with students at their current level by pacing instruction and introducing new materials to address their individual strengths and weaknesses.
-
Orton-Gillingham is a highly structured approach that breaks down reading and spelling into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then builds on these skills over time. It was the first approach to utilize multisensory teaching strategies for reading instruction, which is considered highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia. Educators use sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help students connect and comprehend the concepts.
-
Orton-Gillingham was the first teaching approach designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. In the 1930s, neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton and educator/psychologist Anna Gillingham developed the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction for students with 'word-blindness,' later known as dyslexia. Their approach combined multisensory teaching strategies paired with systematic, sequential lessons focused on phonics.
Today, Orton-Gillingham is used in many reading programs as an effective way to teach literacy. We are proud to apply the approach to help our students at the Graybill Literacy & Learning Studio.

The Benefits of Private Tutoring

Studies indicate that personalized instruction helps students develop a growth mindset, leading to higher self-esteem and motivation.Customized Learning Pace

Strong literacy, math, and critical thinking skills carry over into college and career success, giving students an academic advantage for life.

A Teaching Approach that Works!
We incorporate two of the most effective, research-backed teaching methodologies to ensure student success:
-
A step-by-step, systematic approach to decoding words, enhancing comprehension, and improving fluency. These evidence-based strategies allow students of all learning abilities to build confidence, develop stronger cognitive skills, and unlock their full potential. The fundamentals of structured literacy are:
Systematic – The organization of material follows the logical order of the language. The sequence begins with the easier and most basic concepts and elements, and progresses methodically to more challenging/complex concepts and elements. Following this learning sequence helps students gain both fluency and confidence.
Cumulative – Each step is based on concepts previously learned.
Explicit – We deliberately teach all concepts with continuous student-teacher interaction. It is not assumed that a student will naturally deduce these concepts on their own, so direct instruction is integrated into our regular sessions.
Individualized – Our instruction is designed to meet your student’s specific needs and is based on careful and continuous assessment. The content is then presented until it is mastered to the degree of automaticity. Automaticity is critical to freeing your student’s attention and cognitive resources to focus on comprehension and expression.
-
A multisensory, structured literacy method proven to help struggling readers and students with dyslexia build strong reading foundations. This method of teaching engages more than one sense at a time. Using sight, hearing, movement, and touch gives kids more than one way to connect with what they are learning. Some of our favorite techniques include writing in sand, story sticks, air writing, and engaging in a physical activity during the learning process. These activities increase engagement by tapping into a child’s creativity and sense of fun. Learn more about the Orton-Gillingham Approach here.
